MOTD- Juventus 2-0 Celtic

Juventus have reached the Quarterfinals of the Uefa Champions League with a 2-0 win over Celtic and 5-0 win on aggregate. The match started slowly in the pouring rain, with Celtic settling into the game much like they did in the first leg. As Celtic started to settle they almost grabbed an opener in the twenty-first minute but Joe Ledley’s shot from twenty-five yards out whistled wide of the post. Amazingly, Juventus went up seconds later when they dispossessed Celtic in their own half. Juventus’ Fabio Quagliarella got the ball right outside Cetic’s box, dribbled inside, and volleyed through the legs of Celtic defender Kelvin Wilson. Celtic goalkeeper Fraser Forster could only parry the shot, and the ball fell to Alessandro Marti who tapped it in from six yards out to make 1-0 against the run of play.

Celtic where not fazed by the goal though, and kept up the pressure. They almost equalized only three minutes after the goal and a Kris Commons shot from twenty-five yards out took a deflection and forced Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon to react sharply and push it inches wide. Neither side could create anything much for the rest of the half, and the first half ended 1-0.

Starting the second half strongly, Juventus grabbed their second goal of the match in the fifty-eighth minute off another tap-in. Andrea Pirlo’s inch-perfect lofted long ball found the run of Arturo Vidal on the left of the Celtic box and Vidal chested it down and played the ball past an oncoming Forster to Qualiarella who tapped it in from two yards out. For the rest of the match it was a matter of running down the clock for Juventus and they did it well, with Celtic’s only chance for the rest of the match being a Georgios Samaras shot that blazed over the bar in the eighty-second minute. Despite deserving a goal in the tie, the match ended 2-0 and Juventus won the tie 5-0 on aggregate and Celtic failing to score a goal.
