Brian McDermott sacked as Reading manager

Brian McDermott has been sacked as manager of English Premier League side Reading only thirty-three days after winning the  Premier League manager of the month award.  The fifty-one-year-old and his side won multiple important games in January (including a draw against Chelsea and wins against Newcastle and West Brom) which earned him the award, but have since been on catastrophic form losing their last five games.  During that losing run they scored four goals and allowed twelve, and after their 2-1 loss to Aston Villa on Saturday it seemed inevitable that he would get sacked, and it was announced on Reading’s official website that he was fired on Monday morning.

“Reading Football Club has announced today the departure of manager Brian McDermott,” a statement on their website read.

“Owner Anton Zingarevich wishes to place on record his thanks to Brian, who had achieved great success with the club since taking over as manager in December 2009.

“Brian gained promotion to the Barclays Premier League last year for only the second time in the club’s history thanks to a remarkable run at the end of last season.

“However, in our current situation, Anton Zingarevich felt a change was necessary.”

The Englishman took over as manager in December 2009 and won Reading promotion from the English Championship last year.  He is the fourth Premier League manager to be sacked so far this season, along with Chelsea’s Roberto Di Matteo, Queens Park Rangers’s Mark Hughes, and Southampton’s Nigel Adkins.  Reading’s assistant coach Nigel Gibbs has also been sacked and the academy head Eamonn Dolan is temporarily in charge.  McDermott’s potential successors include Dick Advocaat former Netherlands coach and Nigel Adkins who was sacked by Southampton in January.
