MOTD- Bayern Munich 0-2 Arsenal

Arsenal scored a 2-0 win over Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena, but still dropped out of the Champions League (3-3) on away goals.  Arsenal started the game confidently, and amazingly went up only three minutes into the match.  Aaron Ramsey was set free on the left by a brilliant Santi Cazorla through ball, and he played the ball Tomas Rosicky in center of the Bayern half.  Rosicky slipped the ball in for Theo Walcott in the right side of the Bayern box, and Walcott slammed a low cross across the box.  The cross found Oliver Giroud, and the Frenchman slammed the ball into the back of the net from five yards out to put Arsenal 1-0 up.  But Bayern were the side to react to the goal, and quickly started to mount pressure.  Seconds after Arsenal scored, Toni Kroos tested Arsenal goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski from twenty-five yards out, but Fabianski did well to get down to his left and stop the shot.  Soon after, a half-cleared corner reached Luiz Gustavo and Gustavo’s volley from fifteen yards out fizzed just over the bar.

Bayern looked much the better team, and got another chance to equalize when Philipp Lahm cut the ball back to Kroos from the right, but Kroos’s shot was to close to Fabianski and he got down to make the save.  In the twenty-eighth Arjen Robben hit a low dipping shot that went just wide of the far post, but Bayern couldn’t find the back of the net.  Arsenal still looked dangerous on the counter attack though, and when Walcott drilled a magnificent low cross from the right in the thirty-second minute, Giroud was inches away from making contact with the ball and getting a second goal.  But Bayern were disappointing in the final third and couldn’t create many chances despite Arsenal cracking, and after one minute of injury time the first half ended.

Bayern started the second half the better side, and almost scored in the forty-seventh minute when Ramsey lost the ball and Robben fired from twenty-yards out and his shot went just wide.  Seconds later Kroos got a chance in almost the exact spot as Robben’s shot earlier, but Kroos also fizzed it just wide.  Bayern got another chance in the fifty-eighth minute, but Fabianski saved Tomas Muller’s shot from twenty-five yards.  In the sixty-eighth minute Bayern showed (for one of the first times in the match) their class when Robben played the ball to Muller down the right and Muller beautifully flicked the ball back to Robben to put the German in on goal.  Robben took the ball into the Arsenal box and his toe-poke forced Fabianski to make the save to his left.  The game began to become more open, and when Arsenal brought on Gervinho the Gunners started to get more chances.

The game desperately needed a goal, and almost got one when Gervinho played a one-two with Cazorla to give him space in the center of the box.  Gervinho turned with the ball and got it on his left and fizzed a shot across the Bayern goal that went inches wide.  But the game finally saw another goal, and when Cazorla whipped in a corner to Laurent Koscielny in the eighty-fifth minute the Frenchman headed it past Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer and into the near post of the net.  Just when the comeback looked on (as Arsenal only needed one more goal to advance), Arsenal could not score in the last five minutes and after three minutes of injury time the match ended 2-0 with Bayern advancing to the Quarterfinals through away goals on a 3-3 aggregate score.
