Cardiff City secure promotion

English Championship side Cardiff City have secured promotion to the Premier League, following their 0-0 draw with Charlton.  Cardiff are set to become the second Welsh side in the Premier League, and have claimed a spot in the top-flight for the first time in fifty-one years.  Although qualifying for the play-offs in the last three seasons, the Welsh side failed to reach the Premier League, but being thirteen points clear of third place in first place, and seven points above Hull City with only three games left in the season, the club has secured a spot in the top-flight.

“I am very proud of the football club,” Cardiff manager Malkay Mackay said. “It is an occasion the people of this football club have waited an awful long time for.

“There has been a lot of disappoint in that time and the backroom staff and directors here have been through some tough times. Obviously the players and especially the people of Cardiff have been waiting a long time to be back in the top division and we’ve never been in the Premier League.

“They have backed me and the team in the last eighteen months and for that I’ll be forever grateful. I hope this goes a little way to repaying the backing they have given me since I came in.”

It has been quite a journey for The Bluebirds, who amazingly finished third from the bottom in the fourth tier of English football only seventeen years ago.  Although winning promotion in 1999, Cardiff were back in the basement division in 2000, but stunningly, they climbed though the ranks, reaching the Championship in 2004.  Reaching the play-offs in every one of the last three seasons, Cardiff have finally secured promotion, and with a win over Burnley on Saturday, the club could secure a first place finish.

With all the riches and television deals that come with the Premier League, Cardiff owner Vincent Tan has said the club could spend up to twenty-five million pounds on new players.  “We need to strategise well and we’d like to spend some money – maybe twenty to twenty-five million,” Tan said.  “Others have spent a big amount of money and don’t do well, so we will try to spend smartly.”
