Suarez apologizes to Ivanovic

Liverpool forward Luis Suarez has apologized to Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic, following the Uruguayan biting Ivanovic during Liverpool’s 2-2 draw against Chelsea at Anfield.  In the seventieth minute of the Premier League match, Suarez moved his face towards Ivanovic while the two were tussling inside the Chelsea, before biting the Serbian in the arm.

Suarez has taken to Twitter to apologize to Ivanovic, calling his behavior “inexcusable.”

Suarez also apologized via a statement on Liverpool’s official website: “I am deeply sorry for my inexcusable behaviour earlier today during our match against Chelsea. “I have issued an apology and have tried to contact Branislav Ivanović to speak to him personally. I apologise also to my manager, playing colleagues and everyone at Liverpool Football Club for letting them down.”

Liverpool manager Brenden Rodgers and managing director Ian Ayre both criticized Suarez, with Rodgers claiming Suarez’s action was “unacceptable”, and Ayre saying Suarez let the club down. Gordon Taylor, the Professional Footballers’ Association chief executive, also criticized the twenty-six-year-old saying: “It was not good to see to say the least. It was unacceptable.

“It’s uncalled for, it’s not good, it’s depressing, it’s such a shame for a player who’s a really good footballer but this is not the first time that such things have happened. I know it’s a really difficult one for Liverpool and the FA are going to have to deal with it.”

Suarez earned the nick-name “the cannibal of Ajax”, after he bit PSV Eindhoven’s Otman Bakkal in his time with Ajax.  He earned a seven match ban for the indecent in the Netherlands, and the rest of his season is now at risk, with the Uruguayan set to be given a lengthy ban by the FA.

“I’ve spoken to Ivanovic on the phone and I could apologise directly to him. Thanks for accepting,” Suarez tweeted after speaking to Ivanovic.
