Gareth Bale scoops PFA Player of the year prizes

Tottenham Hotspur winger Gareth Bale has become the third man to win the PFA Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year award in the same year, after bagging both 2012/2013 prizes.  The twenty-three-year-old’s fellow professionals voted for the Welshman ahead of Luis Suarez, Robin van Persie, Michael Carrick, Eden Hazard and Juan Mata in the senior competition, and Hazard, Christian Benteke, Romelu Lukaku, Danny Welbeck and Jack Wilshere in the young player award.

Bale was favored to win both prizes after his dazzling performance for Tottenham so far this season, almost single-handedly spearheading their bid of Champions League qualification.  He has scored twenty-four goals in forty games for Tottenham so far this season in all competitions, also having ten assists.  Winning the senior prize for the second time in two years, Bale also became part of the prestigious group of two-time winners, which features only Cristiano Ronaldo, Thierry Henry and Alan Shearer.

It’s a massive honor,” Bale said at the PFA awards ceremony in London. “To be voted by your peers is one of the biggest things in the game. It’s great to win it and I am delighted.

“When you look at the list, there are some massive names on it but I couldn’t have done it without the team. They have been fantastic this year and so has the manager.

“The other nominees have been unbelievable, they have been outstanding for their clubs and it’s a massive moment to win, especially as it’s both awards and it’s something that I’m extremely proud of.”

The Premier League Team of the Year was also announced at the awards ceremony, with the team made up of: David de Gea (Manchester United), Pablo Zabaleta (Manchester City), Jan Vertonghen (Tottenham Hotspur), Rio Ferdinand (Manchester United), Leighton Baines (Everton), Michael Carrick (Manchester United), Juan Mata (Chelsea), Gareth Bale (Tottenham Hotspur), Luis Suarez (Liverpool), Eden Hazard (Chelsea), and Robin van Persie (Manchester United).
