Jose Mourinho will leave Real Madrid over the summer after agreeing a deal with the club

Jose Mourinho’s proposed move to Chelsea has overcome a massive obstacle following Real Madrid president Florentino Perez’s announcement that Mourinho will leave the club at the end of the season after the two parties had agreed to relinquish Mourinho’s £17 million compensation cost.  Perez confirmed that the two had come to a mutual agreement to allow Mourinho to leave Madrid in the summer as a free agent, allowing the Portuguese manager to formalize his predicted return to Chelsea.

Although Mourinho has won three trophies during his three-year spell at Madrid (the Copa del Rey in 2011, the 2012 La Liga title, and the 2012/2013 Supercopa), the 50-year-old failed to deliver Madrid the Champions League title much wanted by the Madrid owners, partly resulting in Mourinho’s departure from Madrid.  The former Chelsea manager has mainly left due to his alienation of the Madrid dressing room, leading to Mourinho losing the respect of the vast majority of the Madrid squad.  Mourinho’s only reported supporters among the dressing room that are left are Luka Modric, Michael Essien, and Diego Lopez, with the rest of the squad wanting the gaffer to leave.

The Madrid fans have also lost faith in Mourinho, and a madridista fans’ poll in AS found that 82% of Madrid supporters would rather Mourinho leave immediately instead of remaining at Los Blancos for the rest of the season.

Mourinho met with Madrid president Perez at their Valdebebas training ground Monday afternoon, and the two agreed to bring an end to Mourinho’s current contract, which was due to end in 2016.  The 50-year-old will remain in charge of Madrid for the club’s remaining two matches of the season, which will be an away match at Real Sociedad on May 26 and a home encounter with Osasuna on June 2.

“After conversations with our coach Jose Mourinho, we have decided to end our relationship at the end of this season,” Perez said. “Both the club and the coach think this is the right moment to end the relationship. In the name of all the board I want to thank Mourinho for his work over these three years, he has helped us make an important sporting improvement. We wish him success in the next stage of his career.”

Paris Saint-Germain manager Carlo Ancelotti is now favorite to take over Mourinho’s position, and Perez said he was considering approaching the Italian:  “I have maximum respect for PSG, its president, and all other clubs,” the Madrid president said. “That is how we work. There was a call made about the possibility of Carlo Ancelotti coming here, and they told us he was under contract. The new coach is not something which will be resolved tomorrow, we have time to think about options. There are many of these.”
