Midweek Musings: Top five summer transfer targets Part 1

By on June 24, 2013

As July 1 sneaks closer and closer, one must prepare for the oncoming rush of transfers, flashbulbs at press conferences, and players snubbing clubs. While the official beginning to the transfer window is yet to come, many big name signings including those of Neymar and Wilfred Zaha have already been completed.

But many players, either young rising stars or proven professionals that are looking for a change are still on the market, so here we will look at the two of the top five transfer targets that could make expensive moves the summer (not necessarily the top two though).

Edison Cavani (Napoli and Uruguay)

Napoli’s prolific front man has been in fabulous form, netting 29 goals in his 35 Serie A appearances last season. The Uruguayan has attracted the attention of multiple world class clubs, and is still a few years away from reaching his prime at the age of 26. Cavani moved to Napoli for 17 million Euros in 2010, and instantly installed himself as a top striker, scoring 33 goals in each of his first two seasons at the Italian club. The No7 also helped Uruguay to earn their fourth place World Cup finish in 2010, scoring a key goal against Germany despite Diego Forlan being preferred over him.

Cavani’s tireless work-rate and ability to score wonderful goals has made him a top target for multiple clubs. Chelsea are reportedly preparing to make a bid for the forward, while Manchester City are also interested in the 26-year-old. Paris Saint-Germain are also looking into Cavani, although their acquisitions of Ezequiel Lavezzi, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Javier Pastore over the past few seasons have not done a potential move to capture Cavani any favors.
Value: 54 million pounds

Isco (Malaga and Spain)

Manchester City and Real Madrid target Isco made a massive break-through last season

The young Malaga starlet made a massive break-though last season, setting him up as one of the top targets for many European clubs. Playing for Spain’s fabled national team at the Under-16, Under-17, Under-18, Under-19, Under-20, Under-21 and Under-23 levels, Isco finally won his first senior cap for La Roja after an impressive season at Malaga. The attacking midfielder first attracted the eyes of clubs including Manchester City during his first taste at the Champions League, with Isco scoring three goals in his first eight CL matches, helping Malaga reach the Quarterfinals. Also starring in Malaga’s La Liga campaign and Spain’s victorious European Under-21 Championships’ side, the 21-year-old is a potential runner for future Ballon D’or’s.

Standing at 5ft 9 inches, the playmaker’s ability to beat players and close control of the ball would make him a star wherever he will move. He was originally expected to join Malaga’s former coach Manuel Pellegrini at Manchester City, but Real Madrid are now ahead in the race to sign Isco after the future star rejected a move to City.
