MOTD preview- Italy v Spain

By on June 27, 2013

Italy will travel to the Castelao to face the unenviable challenge of Spain in a rematch of the Euro 2012 final in the Confederations Cup semifinals. Although the Italians were in form when they last met Spain in the memorable Euro final last year, they ended up losing 4-0 to La Roja. Now, with key players including Mario Balotelli injured and Cesare Prandelli’s side not performing particularly well, the prospect of Spain seeming daunting to many Italians.

With their defense looking quite shaky, as shown in their narrow 4-3 victory over Japan in Group B, Italy’s best chance of moving on to the final will lie in their attacking presence. Having scored eight goals in their Group matches, Italy have looked strong in the opposition half, although they will have much trouble breaking down Spain’s defense if they get the chance.

La Roja meanwhile will view the match as one they should win, having already beat Uruguay, Nigeria, and Tahiti in the Confed Group Stage, scoring fifteen goals in the process. Although they drew 1-1 with the Azzuri in Euro 2012 before their victory in the final, Vincent Del Bosque’s side have only lost once to Italy since 2008. But whether La Roja continue their prosperous streak against Italy or not, the match is sure to be exciting, so look out for my full-time report right here on Football Everyday!
