Bayern Munich agree €25m fee for Thiago Alcantara

Bayern Munich have agreed a €25 million fee with Barcelona for Thiago Alcantara as the Spaniard signs a four-year contract at the Allianz Arena. Subject to a medical, Alcantara will reunite with former manager Pep Guardiaola at Bayern after Barca announced they had agreed a somewhat fair€25 million deal with the German champions in a short-statement on their official website.

Alcantara had seemed set to join Manchester United only a week ago but United’s new manager David Moyes’ has lost out on his No1 transfer target to Bayern. Old Trafford looked to be the better option for the 22-year-old as he would be promised a starting position in United’s not-so-strong midfield whereas he would have to fight for a spot in the star-lined Bayern side. Still, Alcantara decided to move to the Bundesliga only a year before the 2014 World Cup, which the starlet hopes to travel to in Spain’s squad.

Alcantara is headed in the right direction to achieve his goal, as Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, Bayern chairman said the Barca midfielder was the Bavarian’s top summer target.

“Thiago Alcântara was the biggest wish of our new coach, Pep Guardiola. We are pleased that we have succeeded in this great transfer,” Rummenigge told Bayern’s official website.

“Thiago has only just been named the best player at the European Under-21 Championship. He is a fantastic player with great perspective, which will strengthen Bayern.”

The former Spain Under-21 captain wished to leave Barca after receiving limited limited playing time, just after leading Spain’s Under-21’s to the European Under-21 Championships trophy and winning the Best Player award for the tournament. Also scoring a hat-trick in the final against Italy, he earned his first senior cap for La Roja after his stellar displays in the tournament.
