Loic Remy has became Newcastle United's first signing of the transfer window on a season long loan

Newcastle United have signed Loic Remy from Queens Park Rangers on a season-long loan seven months after the French forward turned down the Magpies to move to Loftus Road in January. Newcastle had looked set to sign the 26-year-old on a permanent deal from Marseille in January for around £9 million, but Remy chose to move to QPR in a bid to earn higher wages.

The French international scored six goals in 14 matches for The Hoops, but his efforts failed to take the club out of last place in the Premier League as Harry Redknapp’s side were relegated to the Championship. As a result of relegation QPR were desperate to take Remy’s £70,000-a-week earnings of their wage bid, and finally after the former France Under-20 and Under-21 forward passed an exhaustive medical at St. James’ Park, Newcastle completed the loan move, which could be made permanent next June. The Toon will pay a £2m facilitation fee for Remy, who said he was very happy to join the English club.

“I’m very happy to be a Newcastle player,” he told Newcastle’s official website. “It will be a huge honor to play for such a big club. I am very motivated this year to get into the World Cup squad for my country. I know in order to do that I need to have a big season and a successful campaign with Newcastle United. I am focused on helping the team achieve success this season and scoring as many goals as I can.”

Manager Alan Pardew also said he was delighted that Remy would become new Director of Football Joe Kinnear’s first signing: “Loic is a great player and I’m delighted that Joe has got him on board for us.

“He’ll be a great addition to the squad, he gives us strength and pace up front and I’m sure he’ll bring plenty of goals.

“It’s a big season for Loic, like it is for all our international players ahead of the World Cup, which will only provide extra incentive for him to play at the very top of his game.”

Remy will also become Pardew’s first senior signing of the transfer window, and although he will join first team forward’s Papiss Cisse and Yoan Gouffran on Tyneside the club has agreed an £8m fee with Lyon for French striker Bafetimbi Gomis.
