MOTD- Chelsea 2-0 Fulham
John Obi Mikel scored his first ever Premier League goal in 191 league appearances as Chelsea swerved back on course after a rough few weeks with a 2-0 win over Fulham in the North London derby. Although doubts about the Blues manager Jose Mourinho are still ripe, the former Real Madrid boss’ side went to the top of the Premier League table, at the same time sending Fulham into the relegation zone.
The former Premier League champions earned their first win in over a month, but perhaps should have won by a bigger tally of goals after their explosive start. Samuel Eto’o tipped a Branislav Ivanovic cross away from the clutches of Fulham goalkeeper David Stockdale just wide of the post, but Fulham almost grabbed the lead in the twelfth when Pajtim Kasami slipped Darren Bent in on goal down the middle with a beautiful through ball.
Soon Chelsea’s bright start began to deteriorate, as Mourinho’s men began to lack inspiration. Although Ivanovic nearly opened the deadlock just before the end of the half with a low drive from the right which Stockdale palmed wide, Chelsea remained asleep as the match rolled on to the second half. Martin Jol’s side weren’t at all awake either, allowing Chelsea, despite all their rubbish football, to take the lead in the fifty-second minute. Hazard found Andre Schurrle down the left, and the €21 million summer capture from Bayer Leverkusen skipped by Sascha Riether before drilling a low cross into the six yard box, which Stockdale flapped out to Eto’o. The forward directed the ball back towards goal, and Stockdale did well to tip the ball away, unfortunately for the goalkeeper it bounced straight to Oscar, who could hardly miss the wide open goal from two yards out.
Steve Sidwell headed a Kasami free-kick inches over the bar at the far post just seconds later, but the goal finally woke Chelsea up, with Mourinho’s side doubling their lead through, yes, no kidding, Mikel. Pigs were flying and water ran uphill as Frank Lampard curled a corner from the left to the back post, which John Terry headed back to Mikel, who snapped a sharp side-volley into the bottom corner as if he was a seasoned striker. Fulham attempted to muster a comeback, but, they’re playing Chelsea, or in other words, the home side managed to hold on to the win.
Man of the Match: John Obi Mikel (Come on, you have to give it to him)
