Jens Lehmann: “I don’t see a €50m difference” between Ozil and Bale

Jens Lahmann claimed the €100 million fee Real Madrid paid for Gareth Bale is ridiculous considering Arsenal’s capture of Mesut Ozil for nearly €50 million less in an interview with Spox.  The former Arsenal goalkeeper also commented on how the price of footballers has skyrocketed over the past five years, saying even the reported £42.5 million fee Arsenal paid to acquire Ozil’s skills from Madrid was too much.

“In all honesty, Arsenal paid too much for Mesut Ozil, but that’s because Gareth Bale went to Real Madrid for so much more money. Nobody is worth that much,” Lehmann said.

“The Özil deal was much better. I don’t see a €50m difference between the two players. That’s how that market works when a club like Real Madrid loses the plot.”

On the other hand, Real Madrid followers have taken a more positive note of the transfer, with the latest star to announce that it doesn’t matter how much is paid for him, only how good he is, is former Brazilian international Ronaldo.

“There are great expectations for him. I’m going to follow him and I hope he has a huge season,” the former Madrid forward said.  “What really matters isn’t how much a player is worth, but how good he really is. Players cost what is paid for them, and the important thing is that that they can then prove they were worth it.”
