Real Madrid double Diego Lopez’s salary

By on October 31, 2013

Carlo Ancelotti is extremely pleased with his goalkeeper Diego Lopez, so much so that Real Madrid are set to double the Spaniard’s salary to €4.5 million before tax deduction. Although the length of the contract will not be changed the 32-year-old will remain in Madrid for the next four years, a lengthily contract for a player already aged 32.

The goalkeeper’s performances, which have won him the starting spot ahead of Iker Casillas, since joining in the club in January as a back-up for the injured Casillas have been, for the most part, exceptional, leading to the drastic increase in the former Sevilla player’s earnings. Lopez will also hold bigger percent of his image rights after reportedly seamless negotiations ended, yet Madrid, as customary when announcing salary upgrades, will most likely wait until the end of the season to officially announce the news.

Still, the news will probably filter through to Casillas, who mustn’t find this welcome after finding Lopez preferred by Ancelotti in the beginning of the season. Ancelotti has used the tactic of playing Casillas in the Cup and Champions League and Lopez in La Liga, but Casillas recently claimed he would consider leaving the club he has been at for over 24 years if he is not rewarded with more playing time. Yet that would most likely mean a considerable wage cut; the 32-year-old currently earns around €7.4 million a year.
