Watford Watch: Alexander Mejia

Colombia secured all three points in their opening game against the Greeks courtesy of goals from Pablo Armero, Teofilo Gutierrez and James Rodriguez. Many have tipped the South American’s to make a big impact at this tournament despite the huge disappointment of losing star man Radamel Falcao to injury, and in a group consisting of Ivory Coast, Japan and Greece the Colombians have a good chance of progressing to the knock-out phase of the competition.

Going 2-0 up put the team playing in yellow into a position of some comfort against an aging Greek side, and this allowed Watford target Alex Mejia to get a run out in Brazil. The 25-year-old plays for Atletico Nacional at club level, yet has been heavily linked with a move to Watford in recent weeks.

The midfielder was introduced into the match in Belo Horizonte on the 70 minute mark to rack up his ninth cap for his country, although with the game already wrapped up it would have been difficult for any substitute to make an impact on the game. Mejia was eased into his first appearance at a major international tournament and was on the pitch to see the ever impressive James Rodriguez snatch a third goal in stoppage time. The Hornet target will be looking to get more minutes under his belt as the World Cup continues with games against Japan and Ivory Coast to come. He will be hoping he can impress even other European teams aside from Watford in what is dubbed as the biggest shop window in football, the World Cup.

Meanwhile, former Watford keeper Ben Foster was be on the bench for England’s crunch 2-1 loss to Italy. Second choice will be fought out by himself and Fraser Forster of Celtic, but Foster will feel he will have the edge if Joe Hart sustains an injury.
