World Cup 2014: Brazil Ease to Victory Over Spirited Cameroon

By on June 24, 2014

A Neymar-inspired Brazil were able to cruise to a 4-1 victory over a more spirited Cameroon side in Sao Paulo to progress as Group A winners.

Brazil ultimately controlled the game throughout large periods, and their dominance began in earnest as Paulinho went close early on for the hosts. They continued to camp inside Cameroon’s half until Fred’s fantastic right wing pass was converted by the irreplaceable Neymar from fifteen yards. You would suspect that the Indomitable Lions were in for a long night.

However, they summoned some character that had been absent throughout their woeful World Cup campaign by resolutely holding off Brazil, before a spate of corners resulted in Allan Nyom, who was lucky no to be booked for a needless push on Neymar, sending a low cross that was begging to be finished off. Joel Matip scored his first ever Cameroon goal and suddenly Sao Paulo was nervous.

Alas, it wasn’t to last. Neymar picked the ball up from deep ten minutes later, going past two defenders as if they weren’t there before finishing beautifully to somewhat calm Sao Paulo down. The first half was to pass without further incident, as Brazil controlled the match to half-time.

Brazil started the second half with a familiar swagger, as Neymar was once again the source of permanent problems for Cameroon. A free-kick led to Brazil recycling the ball wide to David Luiz, whose perfect cross was expertly dispatched by Fred, who will be hoping that a goal can turn around his lackluster tournament.

The game was to settle again once more until substitute Fernandinho scored after Cameroon made a mess of a defensive free-kick. This did little to lift a darkened mood, as twenty minutes previously Neymar had to be substituted after appearing to suffer and injury. Should he be forced to miss the tournament, then Brazil may become a different proposition. Brazil will face Chile in the last 16, whilst Cameroon go home pointless.
