Semifinal MOTD Preview: Brazil V Germany

By on July 8, 2014

Not since Brazil last win the World Cup have they been this close to glory. In 2006, they found themselves knocked out at the Quarterfinal stage, and in 2010, the Netherlands knocked them out at the last eight. And now, as hosts of the tournament, they will have tenfold more support. But with that, they will have tenfold more pressure on their backs.

Yet the problem is, they are hardly favorites, without Neymar and Thiago Silva, who found themselves injured and suspended, respectively, during Brazil’s Quarterfinal against Colombia. So much pressure and expectation is on their backs, but right at the crucial moment in which they needed to be favorites they are underdogs. So far, they have only scraped through the tournament, drawing Mexico and Chile, who they went to penalties with, and only narrowly beating Croatia and Colombia. Brazil might be in the Semifinals, but this tournament they have not been up to par with their expected quality, with Silva and Neymar. Without, it is hard to imagine who will provide the organization at the back and the creativity up front.

And finally, this could be their death sentence as they face a team with expectations and a reputation to match theirs. Germany made fairly easy pickings of France in the Quarterfinals, and have made it all the way to the Semifinals of the World Cup for four successive tournaments now. Joachim Low’s side, hardly suffering from suspension and injury like Brazil, are favorites tonight.
Prediction: Brazil 1-2 Germany
