Arsenal – From Losers To Winners In The Transfer Market

By on July 11, 2014

Over the past few years, Arsenal have somewhat of a dark history in the transfer market. In recent years, flops Marouane Chamakh, Andrey Arshavin, and to some extent Gervinho have disappointed after signing for the club. Namely, this history has been accumulated from the signings for forwards. And the exit of forwards – the sales of Robin van Persie and Cesc Fabregas were viewed as suicide by Arsenal fans. In the past year, though, Arsenal and Arsene Wenger have turned it around. World Cup finalists at this year’s tournament have joined the club. Last season, they held to top spot for longer than any other club.

It all started with the acquisition of Mesut Ozil, not even a year ago. The then 24-year-old was coveted at Real Madrid, and was viewed as a steal for Arsenal at even a cost of £42.5 million. Over the past season, he has instated himself as a constant in the Arsenal midfield, fitting perfectly into their possession style midfield as a winger. Arsenal fans were thrilled at the signing. And this summer, Wenger has done himself even better. For a fee reported to be around £30 to £35 million, the Gunners have signed Alexis Sanchez, the Barcelona star who was a pivotal gem in the Chile side that reached the Second Round of the World Cup this summer and beat Spain. The forward scored two goals at the World Cup, and in just eighty-eight appearances for Barcelona since joining the club in 2011, scored thirty-nine goals and won La Liga, Copa del Rey, and the FIFA Club World Cup in his time at Camp Nou.

For Arsenal, the signing of this winger, just barely entering his prime, is incredible. Finally, they have a world class striker they have been dying for since Robin van Persie departed for Manchester United in 2012. And yet, that is not even the end of it. The club have reportedly agreed a deal to sign France midfielder Mathieu Debuchy, who featured in four World Cup matches this summer, from Newcastle United for £10 million, and Sami Khedira, another Real Madrid midfielder and German international star, has been linked with a move to The Emirates. Although the midfielder could reportedly cost Wenger upwards of £20 million, Khedira, who is likely to start in the World Cup final on Sunday, would turn Wenger from nearly a disgrace to a hero in the transfer market. Heck, with the signing of Sanchez Wenger already is. And remember, the transfer window isn’t even half over.
