MOTD: Manchester City 3-1 Liverpool – Three Toughts

By on August 25, 2014

It wasn’t easy for Manchester City. In fact, for large periods Liverpool more than matched the Sky Blues. But they lacked that clinical finish and killer pass – City won 3-1 as Mario Balotelli watched from the stands, looking over his impressive new club, but equally and perhaps even more impressive old one.

Manchester City are just so deep
Sergio Aguero, Fernandinho, Jesus Navas, Aleksander Kolarov, and Bacary Sagna all started the match on Manchester City’s bench. To put it simply, City’s bench looked better than many players in Liverpool’s starting eleven. Which gives City an edge, especially late on. Aguero’s second touch after coming on was his shot that lead to City’s third goal of the night. Liverpool are far more deep than Manchester United and can rival most other top four contenders, but City completely outclassed them in this respect – depth.

Steven Jovetic and Edin Dzeko work brilliantly together
Both will be fighting for one starting position once Sergio Aguero returns to full fitness, but currently the forward pair have combined brilliant. Complimenting each other perfectly, despite rather similar builds. With Jovetic, though doing the scoring tonight with two goals, playing slightly behind Dzeko, City have poaching ability – as proved in Jovetic’s first goal, as well as two forwards able to combined between themselves and with David Silva, Samir Nasri, and the center midfielders, also with the uncanny ability to play in tight spaces around the box despite their physique. And as proven again today, as well as last weekend, Aguero isn’t bad as a substitute either. They hardly seem to be missing Mario Balotelli…

City are not missing Balotelli – but Liverpool are missing Suarez
Mario Balotelli watched from the stands tonight as his old club, City, played him new club, Liverpool. Far more trouble than his worth at City, “King Mario” has not been missed. With a record breaking scoring run last season and five goals in their first two games so far this season, City are getting off fine with Dzeko, Jovetic, and Aguero. Liverpool on the other hand quite need Balotelli. So far this season, and tonight, they featured a 4-3-3. But they have lacked clinical finishing. Suarez provided that. Liverpool flourished in a 4-4-2 at the end of last season with Sturridge and Suarez up front, yet after he left Liverpool haven’t had another forward to fill his place.

This is why Balotelli, came certainly cheap for just $26 million, could be the perfect fit for Liverpool. As long as he is worth all the trouble he is bound to make.
