LA Galaxy V New England Revolution final likely

As the MLS Cup final nears, it also seems increasingly likely that Thierry Henry’s New York Red Bulls career is as well, with his New York side having lost 2-1 at home in the first leg of their MLS Cup semifinal draw with New England Revolution. They now need at least two goals away in the second to turn the tie around, all without a suspended Bradley Wright-Phillips, their goalscorer tonight. Henry has seemed to play his last home game, and it wasn’t a happy nor night representative of his stay in New York, with this season reportedly set to be his last at the club.

Furthermore, he will have to play the second leg of the semifinal on New England’s turf pitch, of the kind he has so far avoided in his four year MLS stay. NYRB have the odds stacked against them, to say the least. The possible outcomes of the tie, dependent on the second leg result (assuming neither side scores more than five in that match), are below. Notably, the Red Bulls need a win, and also need at least two goals in the process. A 2-0 victory would be their easiest way to the final, as they would need three if New England get one.

It was, however, a different story over in the West Conference Finals. Landon Donovan, set to retire at the end of LA Galaxy’s playoff run, helped his side beat Seattle Sounders 1-0 at home, and at the same time taking a large step toward prolonging his career one more match, and the Galaxy into the final. Heading to Seattle the two side’s fates are currently a lot more even, with the Galaxy largely needing to keep Seattle off the scoreboard to advance – a 1-0 loss would give it to Seattle, though with a draw Bruce Arena’s side will also move into the final. Critically, however, if Donovan’s side manage to get on the scoresheet Seattle would need at least three goals to win the tie.

No matter the odds, though, seize the chance to perhaps watch to greats in their last MLS moments on Saturday, in the Eastern Conference Final, and Sunday, in the Western Conference Final.
