Arsenal set to sign a cheque for Petr Cech

By on June 29, 2015

Our last transfer market article was about Liverpool and this is another piece you need to Cech out! Richard Lewis takes on Arsenal’s swoop for Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech. This article, however, does come with a danger warning — expect a lot of ‘Cech’ puns!

Most people absolutely hate the self-service checkout in supermarkets but apparently Arsene Wenger wants a new Premier League pedigree goalkeeper so much that he’ll use the self-service “Cechout.” Arsene Wenger evidently shops at the high-end grocer Waitrose and at least this summer, he’s also looking for world-class goods in the transfer market. Wenger is “Ceching” out Cech at Stamford Bridge this summer, as Arsenal are reportedly close to agreeing a deal to sign the 33-year-old Cech. Talks between the clubs seem to be progressing towards Arsenal’s first summer acquisition at a reported fee of about £11million. The Czech Republic international played sixteen times in all competitions for the Blues last season as they were crowned champions and, more valuably, has eleven years of title-winning experience at Stamford Bridge.

The move would make sense considering Belgium international Thibaut Courtois became Chelsea’s first-choice stopper last season, leaving Cech — with one year left on his deal — to look to the cups for game-time. Now, Cech has turned his head elsewhere as a departure to Chelsea’s North London rivals looms. Highly-rated Courtois is ten years younger than his counterpart and Cech would join the exodus of club legends Didier Drogba, Ashley Cole and Frank Lampard, who have all departed West London in the last twelve months.

Cechmate in the title race!

Arsenal are clearly in search for quality over quantity this summer, in an effort for a Premier League title push. The club are looking for the final pieces to perfect a winning formula, having won the FA Cup two consecutive times but falling short of Premier League and European glory — exiting the UCL in the Round of 16 in each of the past four seasons. Football can sometimes be like an enthralling game of chess and Arsene Wenger is a great tactical thinker. He has all the knowledge of the game and Cech can help take Wenger step closer to executing.

Chelsea captain John Terry confessed, “Pete will strengthen them for sure. He will save them 12-15 points a season,” per the Daily Star. “He will improve whatever side he goes into.”

It would be an amazing twist of fate should Cech make his competitive Gunners debut against the Blues at Wembley on August second in the FA Community Shield. However, Arsenal’s close proximity to Chelsea actually appeared to outdo all the money Paris Saint-Germain could offer. When Alexis Sanchez joined last summer, he chose London over Liverpool despite potentially taking a wage cut.

Safe hands added to a strong squad!

Petr Cech is sure to be the safe hands at the back, where Arsenal have struggled to find over the past few years. Wojciech Szczesny and 2014 summer signing David Ospina battled it out for a starting position in goal last season but Wenger would be putting a solid end to his goalkeeping woes for the next few years at least.

Arsenal may need to trim their bulging squad before they can make more signings, however. The only reason there would be space for Cech in North London is as a result of Colombian international Ospina being linked with a £3.5 million move to Turkish side Fenerbache.

Ospina has put in a fine display at the 2015 Copa America and although his nation exited the competition at the quarter-final stage, Ospina kept out the likes of Carlos Tevez, Sergio Aguero and Lionel Messi. Colombia were only knocked out by Argentina on penalties. Quite possibly, Fenerbache will also be happy when Cech completes a medical and signs on the dotted line with Arsenal.

More Than This!

It has been reported that Arsenal talisman and top scorer last season Alexis Sanchez was not over the moon that the Gunners only lifted the FA Cup and the Community Shield in his first season in England after his move from 2014/2015 treble winners Barcelona. The Chilean was glad to get his hands on some silverware, but wanted More Than This, having been taped blasting out a rendition of One Direction’s song in celebration for beating Uruguay in the Copa America. If he wants to start a band, it just happens to turn out that Cech himself is an avid drummer.
