5ive will make you go down; how Aguero’s performance v Newcastle ranks historically

By on October 5, 2015

“1,2,3,4, Five will make you get down now.”

One of the most famous lyrics from 90s boy-band Five must be prevalent to Newcastle United’s situation in the Premier League after Sergio Aguero ripped them to shreds with a five-star, five-goal performance in City’s 6-1 victory over the Geordies. Newcastle slumped to the bottom of the Premier League table with the loss and their second half performance was no consolation (maybe they’ll be having a Big Reunion with North East rivals Sunderland in the second tier?). Aguero dismantled Steve McClaren’s men with five goals within fifteen minutes of either side of the half after Newcastle had taken the lead through £13 million Serbian striker Aleksandar Mitrovic. On the back of a promising 2-2 draw with Chelsea last week (thought that point looks less impressive week over week!), the whitewash was perhaps inevitable. The international break couldn’t come at a better time for McClaren, or perhaps, as Chelsea have demonstrated possible, a worse. Richard Lewis reviews Sergio Aguero’s five goals and how they have stacked up in Premier League history:

Silva and Sergio put on a super show!

Magpies are often looking for silver, but the Magpies simply couldn’t keep track of Silva on Saturday as City’s Spanish playmaker David Silva linked up exquisitely with Aguero and Kevin de Bruyne in attack. Although Aguero’s goals have been overshadowed by Robert Lewandowski’s five in half the time in Bayern Munich’s recent Bundesliga win over VfL Wolfsburg, the twenty-seven-year-old Sky Blues sensation will simply be happy to get on the board in the league for the first time since the sixteenth of August before Saturday’s game, following up on his midweek spot-kick winner against Borussia Monchengladbach in the Champions League.

The former Atletico Madrid player also equalled the Premier League goal tally of Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez, as his goal haul took him to eighty-four strikes since his arrival in Manchester in the summer of 2011, when he scored twice on his Monday debut in a 4-0 victory over Swansea. Most famously, he has scored the stoppage time winner to seal City’s first ever Premier League in 2012.

Belgium winger De Bruyne has also made an immediate impact in the Sky Blues shirt, scoring four goals for his new club in seen games despite having to fit into a lineup around Silva, who status in his preferred number ten position. City’s display wrote off any doubts that their momentum is fading and more akin performances from their talented trident up top and City will “Keep On Movin’,” as the Five album is titled, to the summit of the table.

Five by Five!

Aguero joins a list of four other players who have scored five goals in a single match in the Premier League, including Andy Cole, Alan Shearer, Jermain Defoe and Dimitar Berbatov. Ominously for Newcastle, four of the five victims are no longer in the top flight. Cole scored his five in a 9-0 win for Manchester United over Ipswich Town, whilst Shearer scored his collection in Newcastle’s amazing 8-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday. Defoe bagged his famous five in Tottenham Hotspur’s 9-1 win against Wigan Athletic and Berbatov bagged his goals in Manchester United’s 7-1 victory against Blackburn Rovers in 2010 at Old Trafford. Where are these record breakers now?

Andy Cole scored a total of 187 Premier League goals, but couldn’t quite replicate his club success for England (not many changes there!). He had a perfect partnership with Teddy Sheringham on the pitch, but there was no love lost between the pair off-field. Cole is now coaching and his twenty-year-old son called Devante Cole, is playing for Bradford City. The current Cole seems to have inherited some of his father’s goal-scoring touch, scoring three in six games this season.

Alan Shearer is a popular pundit on Match of the Day and still proudly holds the record as the all time top scorer in the Premier League, with 206 strikes in 404 games. He won the title with Blackburn in 1995, then moved to Southampton, before joining Newcastle for £15 million (equivalent to £25.15 million today) to play for his hometown club. Shearer also holds a joint record with Cristiano Ronaldo and Luis Suarez for thirty-one league goals in a season single season in England.

Jermain Defoe has the pivotal role of bench warmer in Sunderland’s current fight against relegation. Defoe has played for several Premier League clubs and even had a short spell in Major League Soccer with Toronto. The Black Cats spent big on the England striker in January in the hope that he could resurrect his form from previous spells with Tottenham Hotspur. Defoe will aim to break back into Sunderland’s side and then see how many more years he can cut it in the top flight as a lethal striker.

Dimitar Berbatov scored in the Champions League for Monaco against Arsenal in the last 16 last season, but did not stay in the French league over the summer. Instead Berbatov moved to Greece in early September, linking upwith PAOK on a free transfer. The 34-year-old has scored once in three games for his new Greek side, having last played in England for Fulham. The tale goes that he learnt how to speak English by watching the Godfather films, although there was only ever going to be one Godfather when he was playing for Manchester United, as no one messes with Sir Alex Ferguson in the Old Trafford dressing room. Berbatov’s attitude eventually lead to his exit from Old Trafford, where he earned the most honours in his career, playing alongside the likes of Ronaldo, Tevez Wayne Rooney, Michael Owen and Javier Hernandez.

Sergio Aguero was the Premier League’s top-scorer last season and his five goals last weekend will go a long way to get him started on maintaining that record this campaign. City spent £38 million on the Argentina international from Atletico Madrid a few years back, which was a bargain considering they spent £49 million on Raheem Sterling this year. Aguero will surely go down as one of the best foreign players to regularly perform in a England, alongside the likes of Eric Cantona, Ronaldo, Suarez and Didier Drogba.
