Five highlights to keep you satisfied over the international break

By on October 15, 2015

For all the international break can offer, it’s just not the same as some nice old club football. You know nothing must be happening when Jose Mourinho decides to sink into the background, though pictures of him watching Ukraine face Spain through the veil of a conspicuous hoodie were perhaps the most interesting aspect of Spain’s meaningless 1-0 win. The Netherlands have crashed out of the Euros for the first time since 1984, you say? Nothing Mourinho can’t do with Chelsea. We’ve compiled five highlights from the past two weeks to try and give the entire endeavor some usefulness. Or at least a cheap laugh.

Lionel Messi calls the whambulance for Cristiano Ronaldo

It turns out that Cristiano Ronaldo has been leading us astray for his entire career. Like any great marketing manager footballer, Ronaldo is releasing a movie documenting a year in his life and proving there is a human behind his superhuman image.

Here’s the trailer:

Well, the people over at The Football Republic had a laugh poking fun at the picture.

Everybody who speaks Spanish had a laugh at those of us who ever maintained a thought (or, more accurately, hope) that this was real.

Manchester United congratulate Marouane Fellaini for bench-warming

You can’t blame Manchester United’s social media team for a lack of effort, offering their congratulations to Marouane Felliani for “helping” Belgium qualify for Euro 2016 with a win over Andorra. His pivotal role: an unused substitute. Cue the brigade of Twitter trolls hungrily awaiting to emerge from their caves.

Sebastian Giovinco is too good for MLS

On Tuesday night Sebastian Giovinco was part of Italy’s Euro 2016 qualifying camp. On Wednesday morning he woke up in Rome. Removed a twelve hour flight back to Toronto, he did this the same night:

How was your Wednesday?

Odegaard back in the headlines

Just when you thought the Martin Odegaard headlines had subsided, he does this:

Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s national anthem streamed 3m times Earlier this year, Zlatan Ibrahimovic released his own rendition of the Swedish national anthem and this week it received a gold record award for three million streams.

For reference, here is the video:

And for those of you who don’t speak Swedish, here’s the best English translation we could get our hands on:

“You old, you free, you high mountained north
You silent, you sweet and beautiful
I salute you, fairest land upon earth
Your sun, your sky, your meadows green
You throne upon memories of great olden days
When honored your name traveled the earth
I know that you are and you will be as you were
In Sweden is where I want to live and die
In Sweden is where I want to live and die”
