Liverpool promise Klopp summer war chest

Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp has reportedly been promised a war chest to embark on a major renovation of Liverpool’s squad this summer.

His squad’s underlying frailties were laid bare in a Capital One Cup final loss to Manchester City on Sunday, and despite the positives, Klopp accepted the grim reality.  “In the end, we lost,” he said. “That’s how finals are, there is only one winner.”

The feeling, he said, is “s***.”

However, he sees reasons to be optimistic.

“It’s obvious that we have to go the hard way, nothing is easy in this moment,” he said. “But if we carry on, work really hard, there is light at the end of the tunnel.”

Perhaps he was inferring to the funds he has apparently been promised to rebuild his own Liverpool team this summer.  The effects of the new Premier League TV deal have reverberated up and down the league and will provide Klopp the backing to embark on a spending spree after a quiet January transfer window.

The Reds fought valiantly against City yesterday night, but their willpower could’t paper over the cracks in their team and they eventually fell in a penalty shootout.  This is evidently not Klopp’s team just yet.

The likes of Jon Flanagan, whose contract ends this summer, and other peripheral squad members will have their position endangered by the renovations.  The German manager has been very lenient to the squad he inherited, jumping at the chance to give them the opportunity to make their case, but Christian Benteke has yet to impress consistently and Divock Origi has been brilliant one day and a hinderance the next.

It has been evident for some time that Liverpool can not be overly reliant on an injury-prone Daniel Sturridge and Philippe Coutinho needs a marquee signing alongside him in the middle to turn this team into a genuine top-four team and potential title dark horse.

Liverpool are linked with Klopp’s former player Mario Götze, who has eighteen months left on his contract at Bayern Munich, and they have already signed Red Star Belgrade teenager Marko Grujić.

Per the Telegraph, club captain Jordan Henderson is well aware of Klopp’s goals.  “I do think he will want to make his own stamp on the transfer market with players that he brings in. That would be the case with any manager really.”

Jürgen Klopp, however, is not just any manager.
