My Euro 2016 Preview Poem!

By on June 8, 2016

The fifteenth edition of the European Championships kicks off on Friday night in Paris with hosts France playing Romania in the opening game in Group A. Twenty-four nations, more than ever before, will battle it out for silverware over the next month and with the tournament so close to commencing, I have written a ten versed poem to preview this year’s competition. Say Bonjour to Euro 2016!

French Fancy their Fortunes in Football Festival!

If there is one tip you could give about the European Championship,
It would be there are now 24 nations hoping not to dip.
A record amount of countries competing in France,
But only one will celebrate with a final song and dance.

The year of 2016 has been one for the lesser team,
With the word underdog no longer consigned under the Denmark log.
Not forgetting that Greece is the word,
Every nation will feel they should be heard.

This time there will be no Greeks or Danes,
However, the tournament will still feature some new names.
A chance for Albania and Wales to set sail,
Giving the Euros an opportunity to feature Gareth Bale.

Some teams will rely on a certain player,
Like Manchester United do with goalkeeper David De Gea.
Although, a charismatic talisman can inspire many a fan,
Just ask Zlatan!

The bookends of this summer event will be at the Stade de France,
With everyone hoping they can take their given chance.
All will be trying to prevent the reign of Spain again,
With the Spanish Army attempting to conquer Paris their main aim.

While Britain contemplates a future in the EU,
The current crop in the England squad will try to surprise a few.
A place in history is there if Roy tastes joy,
But if it goes to penalties in the quarters, well, Oh Boy!

Two shades of Irish green,
Lead by the O’Neill brace and Roy Keane.
A major lack of Dutch,
It will not alter proceedings that much.

Can Portugal provide the right service to football’s Golden Boy,
As Cristiano Ronaldo in front of goal is certainly not coy.
Belgium’s generation of danger men could be a Hazard,
But breaking the defense of Italy should be hard.

Getting out of the group could be as easy as one, two, three,
Whether you are in A, B or C.
Not forgetting the competition there will be in Group E,
For every side beating the World Cup champions is defeat for Germany.

Let us hope the Euros are all about the beautiful game,
Football has no room for the fear of terror or human shame.
A French Revolution can be built under the light of the Eiffel Tower,
With united victory the best way to show the world your ultimate power!
