MOTD (match of the day)- Real Madrid 1-1 Barcelona

By on January 30, 2013

Full Time-  Its been a great game at the Bernabeu, with Madrid grabbing a late equalizer after Barca went ahead.  The first half was marred with chances, the most notable of which was a Xavi free kick that hit the crossbar.  Shortly after that Madrid’s Raphael Varane made a goal line clearance from a Xavi shot, and Benzema a volley went just wide.  The second half started in the favor of Barca, who started playing keep away from Madrid.  They quickly capitalized from the possession, when a Jose Callejon clearance went straight to Messi, who found Cesc Fabregas open on the left.  Fabregas then ran straight at goal and shot it past an oncoming Diego Lopez.  Barca was given the chance to put the game away when Messi was in on goal, but Raphael Varane made a last ditch tackle to stop Messi from shooting. Until about the seventieth minute Barca were playing keep away with Madrid, but then Madrid started putting more pressure on Barca and the flow of the game changed in Madrid’s favor.  Madrid had a golden chance to equalize a few minutes after the the tide changed, when a Michael Essien cross found Cristiano Ronaldo at the back post, but his header went just wide.  Madrid finally found the back of the net in the eighty-first minute when Mesut Ozil found space on the right and his cross found the head of Raphael Varane, who powered the header past Barca keeper Jose Pinto.  Neither side had any good chances after that and the game ended 1-1.

Man of the Match: Raphael Varane
