MOTD- Nigeria 1-0 Burkina Faso

By on February 10, 2013

The African Cup of Nations is over and Nigeria have been crowned champions after beating Burkina Faso. Nigeria started the game fantastically in the FNB Stadium, and got their first chance in the seventh minute when Burkina goalkeeper Daouda Diakite came off his line to catch the ball above his own defenders head, but missed, with Nigeria’s Brown Ideye’s resulting shot looping over the ball. Nigeria kept up the pressure, and Burkina were having trouble getting out of their own half. Nigeria’s persistence eventually paid off, and in the fortieth minute they opened the scoring when Sunday Mbah got the ball just outside the box, flicked it over the Burkina defense, and volleyed it past Diakite into the bottom right corner of Burkina’s net.  The second half started more open, and Nigeria almost doubled their lead in the forty-seventh minute when Victor Moses put Brown Ideye in on goal, but his shot flashed across goal from a hard angle.  Burkina started to put pressure on Nigeria, but could not get anything out of it, even though they tested Nigeria keeper Vincent Enyeama a few times.  During the last couple minutes Burkina got desperate, and their last chance was a free kick from thirty yards out, which was struck over the bar by Moumouni Dagano.  When the whistle blew Nigeria and their supporters were in a state of euphoria, and Vincent Enyeama even tried to pick up the referee Djamel Haimoudi.  The tournament was a great one, with Nigeria winning Burkina Faso getting second and Mali getting third.
Man of the Match: Nigeria’s John Obi Mikel
Reason: For anchoring Nigeria’s defense
