Nigel Adkins replaces Brian McDermott as Reading manager
Reading have announced that former Southampton manager Nigel Adkins will replace Brain McDermott as manager. The forty-eight-year-old has signed a contract that runs until the summer of 2016, and will take hold of a Reading side that is currently in nineteenth place in the English Premier League. Adkins was surprisingly sacked as the Southampton in January after earning back-to-back promotions, and after a two month absence from football, he has joined Reading.
“I am delighted to bring Nigel to our club because he is perfect for us,” Reading owner Anton Zingarevich said.
Adkins has also expressed his joy at joining Reading. “I am pleased to be the Reading manager,” he said. “We Will take it one game at a time and try to keep this club in the Premier League. It’s a good club, I’ve been impressed with them and I’ve always known what sort of club it is. We’re in the Premier League and we want to stay there. I am excited.”
Adkins’ job is to get Reading out of the relegation zone, and the club are currently in nineteenth place in the Premier League, seven points from safety. The Englishman’s old club Southampton are in sixteenth place, so the appointment is a slight downgrade for him. Reading will have a tough time staying in the Premier League, and the way things stand they are set to be relegated along with Queens Park Rangers and Wigan Athletic.
