Suarez facing possible ban for “jab”

Uruguay forward Luis Suarez could possibly miss out on Uruguay’s remaining World Cup qualifiers, and is waiting to learn whether he will face a ban for his latest brush of controversy. The twenty-six year old appeared to aim a punch at Chile’s Gonzalo Jara, who is currently on loan from West Bromwich Albion to Nottingham United, in Uruguay’s World Cup qualifier against Chile on Tuesday in the thirty-fifth minute of the match. Referee Nestor Pitana took no action, and Jara did not fall to ground but instead became involved in a verbal altercation with Suarez. The Liverpool forward did end up getting a yellow card for an unrelated incident in the match, so he will miss Uruguay’s next qualifier, a match against Venezuela in June.

Fifa will wait until Pitana’s report, which is scheduled to be submitted by Thursday, until they decide whether to take any action over the clash. Fifa’s decision will depend on whether Pitana or one of his assistants saw the incident and did not deem it worthy of a penalty, or they missed the punch entirely.

“We are still collecting all the post-match international reports, since the officials have got 24 hours to send them,” Fifa said in a statement. “Based on the mentioned reports, Fifa will proceed accordingly.”

Uruguay ended up losing 2-0 to Chile, and currently sit in sixth place in the Conembol qualifying group. Chile are two places better off in fourth place, with only Argentina, Ecuador and Colombia above them.
