Diaby sidelined until 2014 with knee injury

Arsenal midfielder Abou Diaby will be sidelined for up to eight to nine months with yet another long term injury in his Arsenal career.  The Frenchman has torn his anterior cruciate ligament, which will be a blow for Arsenal, who are already suffering from Jack Wilshere being out with a bruised ankle, and their chances of Champions League qualification.  Arsenal signed Diaby for £2 million in January 2006 from Auxerre a a nineteen-year-old, and since an ankle injury in 2006 the twenty-six-year-old’s career has been plagued with injuries. Diaby became a big part of Arsenal’s midfield, but was restricted to only five appearances last season due to ankle and calf problems.   He has made fourteen appearances for Arsenal so far this season, one of which a Champions League match against Montpellier.

“Abou Diaby injured his left knee in training on Wednesday and subsequent scans have confirmed that he has torn his anterior cruciate ligament,” read a statement on Arsenal’s official website.  “Following consultations with specialists, Abou will undergo surgery to repair the injury in the near future.

“Abou is expected to be out for around eight to nine months. The thoughts and best wishes from everyone at Arsenal are with Abou, and we all wish him a successful recovery.”
