MOTD- Bayern Munich 2-0 Juventus

Bayern Munich have beaten Juventus 2-0 at the Allianz Arena in the first leg of their Champions League Quarterfinal tie, with the Germans having scored an amazing twenty-nine goals in their last ten matches.  Bayern started the match dominantly, and amazingly opened the scoring only fifty-five seconds into the match when Juve’s Andrea Pirlo lost the ball inside his own half.  The ball fell to Bayern left-back David Alaba, who slightly mishit a shot from forty-yards out.  It took a slight deflection of Arturo Vidal and amazingly flew into the corner of the net without Juve goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon even getting near it.  Juve didn’t seem fazed though, with Pirlo flashing a free-kick inches over the crossbar from thirty yards out in the twelfth minute.  Seconds later Juve almost equalized when Vidal hit a swerving shot from a twenty-five yards out, and the shot flashed inches wide of the woodwork.  Despite seeing most of the possession after Bayern’s goal, Juve started to fade out of the match.  Bayern took advantage of that, and took complete control of the match about fifteen minutes into the match.

The German side almost doubled their lead in the eighteenth minute when Franck Ribery stormed down the right flank and hit a low cross of the face of the goal.  Juve’s Andrea Barzagli tried to clear the ball out of the area, but it fell straight to Arjen Robben six yards out from goal.  Robben hit a low volley on goal, and Buffon did well to save the effort with his feet.  Bayern were in total control of the match, with Ribery and Dante both shooting inches wide of the post.

In the thirty-second minute Bayern got another chance to equalize when Tomas Muller ran down the left flank past two Juve defenders.  Muller perfectly cut the ball back to Robben, who whizzed an effort millimeters wide of the near post from four yards out.  Seconds later Robben had another chance to score, but his effort from the edge of the box was straight at Buffon.  Bayern were denied a clear penalty in the fortieth minute when Robben played the ball across the face of goal straight to Mario Mandzukic, who had been having a very good game, only for Mandzukic to be clipped by Giorgio Chiellni.  Referee Mark Clattenburg did not award a penalty though, with Mandzukic left there stunned (that there was no penalty).  In the final seconds of the half Juve did get a good chance to equalize when Pirlo whipped in a corner to the near post, and Leonardo Bonucci latched on to it with a glancing header that went just over the bar.  But neither side could score, and after two minutes of injury-time the first half ended 1-0.

The second half started where the first left off, with Bayern in complete control.   The German side almost doubled their lead three minutes into the half when Mandzukic was given space down the left side of the Juve box through a Luis Gustavo through ball.  Mandzukic powered a shot to Buffon’s near post, with the Italian doing well beat away the Croatian’s first time shot.  Bayern again almost scored when Alaba unexpectedly took a free-kick forty-yards out from goal.  The shot dipped towards goal, with Buffon doing well to palm away the ball just after it bounced in front of his dive.

Bayern finally managed to grab their second goal when Gustavo hit a dipping shot twenty-five yards out from goal in the sixty-fifth minute.  Buffon dived to his right and palmed the shot away, but instead of pushing it wide he pushed it right to Mandzukic on the left side of the goal.  Mandzukic played the ball across the face of the goal to Tomas Muller, who tapped it in to the back of the net to seal the win for Bayern.

Juve immediately responded to the goal by bringing on Mirko Vucinic and Sebastian Giovinco, who made a sudden impact on the match.  The Italian side managed to force a save out of Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer when Vidal played a nice one-two with Stephan Lichsteiner to give him space to shoot.  Vidal’s effort from the edge of the box was poor though, and Neuer easily saved the shot at the near post.  Vidal got another chance to score seconds later, with Neuer doing well to hold on to Vidal’s dipping shot.  Paul Pogba then tested Neuer with a shot from twenty-five yards out, with Juve looking much more dangerous.  Bayern managed to hang on though, and almost grabbed a third goal in the second minute of injury time when Muller hit a low shot on goal from the edge of the box.  Buffon somehow managed to push it away, but it went straight back to Muller.  Muller looked sure to score, but Buffon amazingly manged to block the German’s second effort too.  Bayern couldn’t score again though, and after three minutes of added time the match ended 2-0, with Juve looking more or less out of the competition.
