Yaya Toure signs new contract with Manchester City

Yaya Toure has signed a new long-term contract with Manchester City, a deal that will keep him at the club until 2017.  Toure, who turns thirty in May, has committed himself to City, saying he would like to stay there until the end of his career.  The Ivorian has been a pivotal part of City’s midfield since joining the club from Barcelona in 2010, and has been rewarded with a new contract reportedly worth £220,000 a week.

“This is where I want to be. When I first arrived at City, every time I went to sleep I would dream about us winning something; now it is about us being the best team in whatever competition we take part in,” Toure said.   “I will never forget how I have been treated here by the fans, the club and the owners, and nothing would give me greater pleasure than to finish my career as a Manchester City player.”

The midfielder helped City claim the FA Cup, before playing a big role in getting City their first Premier League title for 44 years.  Although City’s current Premier League campaign is all but over, the current African player of the year is still keen winning the FA Cup for the second time in three years.

“Of course now it looks likely that we will not successfully defend the Premier League title and that is sad for all of us, but we can still finish second and win the FA Cup for a second time in three years and that is still an achievement for a club that won nothing for a long time,” he said.

“We must try to finish on a high note and then start preparing to win more next season. Football is always a challenge and always a puzzle to solve and that is why we all love the game. You have to use your skill, intelligence and strength to constantly improve and that is what we at City intend to do.”

City are currently in second place in the Premier League, fifteen points behind Manchester United.  They are set to face United in the Manchester derby on Monday, with City looking to repeat last years 6-1 thrashing of United at Old Trafford.
