McDermott appointed Leeds manager

Leeds United have appointed Brian McDermott as manager on a three year contract, who will replace caretaker Neil Redfearn.  McDermott will inherit a side that currently sits in seventeenth place in the English Championship, and have lost all of their last four matches.  The Englishman takes over Leeds less than two weeks after Neil Warnock left Elland Road, and will have to engage in a relegation battle, which Leeds now sit in.

“We are delighted to have appointed Brian as our manager,” said the Leeds director David Haigh in a statement. “He is a man with a proven track record of success and shares our vision of the best way to return long-term and sustainable success to this great football club.

“Obviously the immediate aim is a return as soon as possible to the Premiership. Brian’s success in taking Reading to the Premiership last year was a key factor in our decision to hire him.”

McDermott was sacked by Reading only thirty-two days ago, after losing his last five matches with the Premier League club.  The fifty-two-year-old has taken his assistant manager at Reading Nigel Gibbs with him to Yorkshire, who along with McDermott had a tough time at Reading, despite winning the club promotion from the Championship last season.  McDermott had an overall win ratio of 46% with Reading, and took over the club midway through the 2009/2010 season.
