MOTD preview- Bayern Munich vs Barcelona

Barcelona are set to travel to Munich to take on newly crowned German Champions Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Champions League semifinal tie, with the two powerhouses both looking to gain an advantage in the first leg.  While the news of Lionel Messi being declared fit to play is a huge boost for the Blaugrana, they will have a though time against Munich, who have only lost to Barca one in the clubs last six meetings.  There have been two draws in the last six meetings between the clubs, while Bayern have amazingly been victorious in three of the meetings.  Although not doing well in this fixture, Barca have been on an eight match unbeaten run on German soil stretching back to 2001.  The two sides play the exact same style of football, and although Chelsea and Internazionale have sat back and defended against Barca in recent Champions League semifinals, earning them spots in the final, Munich are not expected to take a similar approach.

Although Barca drew both legs of their quarterfinal tie against Paris Saint-Germain, they will expect to come out of the match with a least a draw.  The Blaugrana have been on blistering form, and are unbeaten in eight matches, their last loss coming against Real Madrid in early March.  Although the Spanish side do have reason to worry, as there defense has been rather shaky, and they have won only two out of their last eight away matches.  There attack and midfield have been up-to snuff through, with Tito Vilanova’s side have scored twenty-four goals in their last ten matches.  As usual, they will be looking to play their tiki-taka style of play, which has been very effective in Europe five major league’s, with the club averaging 69.6% of possession in those league this season.

Bayern average’s amount off possession in Europe’s five major leagues has also been very high, with the German side averaging 63.6% of possession.  The possession has recently paid off for Jupp Heynckes’s side, who has stunningly won eighteen of their past nineteen matches in all competitions, with their sole loss coming against Arsenal in the second leg of the Champions League quarterfinal draw.  The side have also recently been very good against Spanish opponents, having only lost one of their last twenty matches against a Spanish opposition.  Their tactics have also been good for their attack, as the club has scored an outstanding thirty-six goal in their last ten matches.  Whether Bayern can score more or not, the match is sure to be exciting, so look out for my full time review, right here on Football Every Day!
