Mario Götze to join Bayern Munich at the end of the season
Bayern Munich have announced that midfielder Mario Götze will join the club from Borussia Dortmund at the end of the current season, following the wingers request to move to the German Champions. The twenty-year-old will become the most expensive German player ever, with the release clause in his contract reported to be worth €37 million.
The news comes at the worst of times for Dortmund, who will play Real Madrid in their Champions League semifinal first leg on Wednesday. Dortmund announced the move earlier on Tuesday via an statement on their official Facebook page saying: “Mario Götze’s agent Volker Struth told us a few days ago that the player wishes to make use of his release clause and on July 1, 2013 move to Bayern Munich.”
Although Bayern claimed they wanted to wait until after Dortmund’s Champions League tie to reveal the news, shortly after Dortmund announced the move Bayern confirmed the signing. “Bayern Munich confirm that the club have reached an agreement with national team player Mario Götze that he will play for Bayern Munich from 1 July 2013. Bayern are prepared to meet the release clause agreed between Borussia Dortmund and Mario Götze,” a statement on Bayern’s official website read.
“Coach Jurgen Klopp and sporting director Michael Zorc asks all fans of Borussia Dortmund to support Mario Götze unconditionally as they would any other player in the final games of the season, but especially in the important Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid.”
Götze will arrive at Bayern on June 31, when former Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola takes over for current manager Jupp Heynckes. Dortmund manager Jurgen Klopp claimed that Guardiola had a lot to do with the move claiming, “Götze was the player Guardiola wished to sign.”
The move will be a huge blow to Dortmund, who lost the Bundesliga title to their closest domestic rivals, Bayern, two weeks ago. Götze rose through the ranks at Dortmund, before making his senior debut for the German side in 2009. There is the possibility of the German international playing against Bayern in the Champions League final, if Dortmund beat Madrid, and Bayern get past Barcelona, who they play in the semifinal first leg Tuesday afternoon.
