Robert Lewandowski taps home the firs of his four goals

Borussia Dortmund have stunningly beaten Real Madrid 4-1 in the Champions League semifinal first leg, with Roberto Lewandowski’s four goals probably sending Dortmund to the finals.  Dortmund started the match very dominant and brightly, with Jurgen Klopp’s side almost taking the lead in the seventh minute when Sven Bender dispossessed Sami Khedira.  Marco Reus took hold of the loose ball inside his own half, and took the ball all the way into Real’s box, beating two Real defenders, before shooting a low shot through the legs of Pepe, which Real goalkeeper Diego Lopez amazingly just managed to tip wide.  Seconds later Dortmund took the lead, when Mario Götze received to ball down the left flank, before curling a cross to the far post.  Robert Lewandowski got in between Pepe and Fabio Coentrao, and tapped the ball past Lopez into the back of the net.

After Dortmund had dominated the opening ten minutes, Madrid stated to come out of their shell, keeping some possession.  Cristiano Ronaldo struck a dipping free-kick on goal from thirty-five yards out, but Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller was up to the task, punching the shot away.  Although not creating much, Real grabbed an equalizer two minutes before the break, moments after Dortmund were denied a penalty.  For some reason, Matt Hummels decided to play a back pass back to Weindenfeller with the bottom of his foot, but didn’t get nearly enough on it, allowing Gonzalo Higuain to intercept.  The Argentinian took the ball up to Weindenfeller, before smartly playing across to the open Ronaldo, who coolly slammed it into the back of the open net.  Dortmund were glad when halftime came, with the score tie 1-1.

It took only Dortmund only four minutes to open the goal-tally in the second half, through Lewandowski.  Reus’ defense splitting pass from the edge of the box found an onside Lewandowski, who beautifully turned with the ball before side-footing it into the back of the net from two yards out.   Only two minutes later Lewandowski became the first player ever to score a hat-trick against Madrid in the Champions League, when a cleared cross came out to Marcel Schmelzer, who smashed a low drive into the box.  The ball came to Pepe, but Lewandowski took it away from the center-back with one touch, before rolling the ball onto his right foot and smashing an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net from ten yards out.

Amazingly, Lewandowski grabbed his fourth goal of the match from the penalty spot in the sixty-seventh minute.  Xabi Alonso shoved Reus over inside the box, leaving referee Bjorn Kuipers no chioce but to award a penalty, which Lewandowski emphatically smashed down the middle when Lopez dived to the right.  Dortmund were completely dominating, and Lewandowski looked for a fifth, with Lopez acrobatically pushing the forward’s twenty-five yard curler.  Real looked slightly dangerous in the final minutes, with Weindenfeller having to quickly get off his line to stop Ronaldo from scoring, and Raphael Varane curling shot just wide of the post following a corner.  But, Madrid could not grab that crucial second away goal, and after three minutes of extra time, the match ended 4-1, with Dortmund, unless Real win 3-0 in the second leg, having placed a spot in the Champions League finals.
