Stoke sack Tony Pulis
Stoke City have confirmed that manager Tony Pulis has left his post after seven years in charge of The Potters, ratifying months of speculation surrounding the Welshamn’s job. Pulis met with owner Peter Coates at Stoke owners’ office for a meeting supposed to be an extensive discussion on Pulis’ job, but Coates had already decided to part ways with Pulis’. Although Stoke claim the 55-year-old was relieved of his duties due to mutual consent, it is understood that Pulis was pushed after his side took an average 13th-place finish in the 2012/13 Premier League.
The “sacking” ends month of speculation surrounding Pulis’ job, which built throughout Stoke’s poor league campaign. The Potter’s had a disastrous start to the season, and midway through November after 13 matches Stoke had only won once, leaving the side flirting with the possibility of relegation. Despite pulling his side back up the table and earning a 13th place finish (around what Stoke place every year), it was not enough for Pulis, who had a 12-month-rollinf contract to keep his job.
Pulis was re-appointed Stoke manager back in 2006, and by 2008 had earned Stoke promotion from the Championship to the Premier League. He etsablished the club in the Premier League, and after earning The Potters’ a 11th place finish in 2010, lead Stoke to their first ever FA Cup final in 2011 which they lost 1-0 to favorites Manchester City. Pulis will feel he should have been given more time with the club, and has consistently told of his desire to stay at Stoke.
A short statement on Stoke’s official website read: “Stoke City and Tony Pulis confirm that they have mutually agreed that Tony will leave the Club with immediate effect.”
Brighton manager Gus Poyet is favorite to take over Pulis’ position, but whoever is appointed Stoke’s new manager will have to do better at the club than Pulis, who despite doing ok with the club never got his side to score many goal. The Potters have had dreadful record of 181 goals in their 182 Premier League matches between under Pulis up to March 2013, a stat which tells it’s own story.
