Ferdinand signs new one-year contract extension
Manchester United center-back Rio Ferdinand has put pen to paper on a new one-year contract extension to keep him at the club for the club past his 35th birthday. The 34-year-old, who’s previous contract was set to expire in the summer, has been rewarded for one of his best seasons at United, with the Englishman making 32 appearances and being voted into the PFA Team of the Year.
Ferdinand has made 432 appearances for United since moving to the club in 2002 for a record fee for a Brit, and has won 14 major titles in his 11 years at the club so far, including six Premier League titles and one Champions League trophy. Keeping the defender, who has been voted into the PFA Team of the Year five times during his time at United, amounts to one of United manager Sir Alex Ferguson’s last pieces of business at the Red Devils.
The 34-year-old defender said: “I am delighted to have signed a new contract. Who wouldn’t want to play in this fantastic team in front of 75,000 fans each week, it has been an incredible journey and I am glad it will continue. I can now fully concentrate on my club career, which has worked well for me over the past few years.”
“This is a great team to be part of and we are now moving into a new era with the club which is very exciting. I have met with David I am really looking forward to working with him and winning many more trophies with this great club.”
In order to elongate his United career, Ferdinand followed the trend set by Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs and retired from his international duties with England earlier in May.
Incoming United manager David Moyes said via a statement on the club’s official website: “(it is) clear for everyone to see that Rio has had one of his best seasons with the club and I think even from the outside you can see what a big character Rio is around the dressing room, so I am delighted he has signed a new contract and I am looking forward to working with him.”
