Mark Hughes named as new Stoke City manager

Stoke City have confirmed Mark Hughes as their new manager, replacing the retiring Tony Pulis as manager of the Premier League club. Despite a disappointing term at Queens Park Rangers, Hughes was immediately picked as favorite to take over at Stoke after Pulis left the club, and following days of talks has been awarded the job, leaving Stoke with yet another Welsh manager.

Hughes has been out of a job since he was sacked by QPR in November, when Hughes’ side’s dismal start to the 2012/13 season saw them in last place in the Premier League after failing to win in twelve matches. The 49-year-old has had brighter moments of his managerial career though, and lead Wales to a World Cup qualifying playoff before guiding Fulham to an eighth place finish in the 2010/11 Premier League.

The former Manchester City manager will look to continue on the path that Pulis, who left Stoke after seven years in charge following a 13th place finish in the EPL, lead the Potters down, in which Stoke stabilized their place in the Premier League once promoted in 2008. Although Hughes, who scored over 200 years during his dazzling 22-year playing career, will probably want to avert Stoke away from their long-ball style of play, it might be tough to do with a club that has played the long ball game for seven years.
