Everton have confirmed the appointment of Roberto Martinez as manager

Everton have confirmed Roberto Martinez as new manager, with Martinez signing a four-year deal at Goodison Park.  The Spaniard will take over for the Manchester United-bound David Moyes, and has been confirmed as manager of The Toffes via a statement on Everton’s official website.  The relatively young 39-year-old was instantly installed as favorite to take over at Goodison following Moyes’ departure, and is known for his attractive attacking brand of football, which made him a popular choice among the Everton owners’.   Although the Spanish manager originally considered his position at former club Wigan Athletic, he has now decided to join The Toffes, who he has signed a four-year deal with after the club agreeing a compensation deal with Wigan, believed to be worth around £1.5 million.

Despite the negative media attention the manager received by leading Wigan to relegation last season, Martinez won the club their first FA Cp with a win over Manchester City at Wembley in May, redeeming his reputation.  Still, the Spaniard opted out of the job of leading Wigan back into the Premier League, with Everton picking up the manager, announcing the appointment via a statement on their official website:  “Everton Football Club is today delighted to confirm the appointment of Roberto Martinez as its next manager,” the statement read.

Martinez, who consistently kept Wigan in the Premier League despite running a tight budget, was a defensive midfielder during his 14-year playing career, in which he won multiple trophies, including the Copa del Rey during his time at Spanish club Real Zaragoza.  Immediately after announcing his retirement in 2007,  Martinez was appointed coach of Swansea City, and during his two years in charge of the then League 2 side, he beat the odds and lead the club to an astonishing FA Cup victory in 2009.  Martinez then moved on to Wigan, and after keeping them in the Premier League for the third consecutive year, finally lead the club to relegation last season, despite winning the FA Cup.
