Liverpool have confirmed the £7 million capture of Iago Aspas from Celta Vigo, following the forward completing a medical with the club. Aspas scored 12 goal in 34 appearances for Spanish side Celta Vigo last season, and will become Liverpool’s second signing of the summer transfer window once his contract in signed.

The 25-year-old’s versatility made him a key choice for Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers as a back-up if Luis Suarez was to make his expected move away from Liverpool, after Fabio Borini failed in his attempt to make the No9 spot his last season. Aspas [underwent a successful medical at the Merseyside this week, despite Celta Vigo keen to keep the forward, who helped the club avoid relegation on the last day of the 2012/13 season.

Liverpool confirmed the signing on their official website in a statement reading: “Liverpool have tonight agreed a deal in principle with Celta Vigo for striker Iago Aspas, subject to documentation being completed. Aspas can play through the middle or out wide and he could become Brendan Rodgers’ second signing of the summer transfer window following a deal for Kolo Touré.”
