Sunderland goalkeeper Simon Mignolet looks set to move to Liverpool as the Reds have agreed to cough up just over £11 million for the Belgian. Mignolet, who started in all 38 of Sunderland’s Premier League matches last season, will travel to Anfield for a medical and to negotiate personal terms after weeks of Liverpool and Sunderland negotiating the move.

Although having two years left on his current contract at Sunderland, Mignolet was keen to complete the transfer as to further enhance his chances of becoming the first choice goalkeeper for Belgium. The Wearsiders’ player of the year last season moved to Sunderland Sint-Truden for £2 million in June 2010, and after an impressive first two seasons at the club became a key part of their side for the 2012/2013 EPL campaign. While the club and manager Paolo Di Canio hoped to retain the 25-year-old, Mignolet insisted on the move, which casts further doubt on Pepe Reina’s, Liverpool’s current starting goalkeeper, future at Anfield.

After an inconstant past two seasons at Liverpool, speculation has surrounded Reina about a potential move to former club Barcelona following news that goalkeeper Victor Valdes would refuse to sign a new contract at Camp Nou. But with Valdes claiming he will see out the final year of his contract at Barca, which ends in June 2014, speculation of Reina’s rumored move faded, leaving the Spaniard most likely sitting on the bench next season if another possible suitor doesn’t make a move for the goalkeeper.
