Liverpool have agreed to let England starlet Jonjo Shelvey move to Swansea City for £6m

Swansea City have agreed a £6 million fee with Liverpool for young midfielder Jonjo Shelvey, in a deal that could likely be completed before the weekend. The England starlet is set to travel to Wales to take a medical and finalize personal terms after facing minimal playing time turning his three year stay at The Reds, after manager Brendan Rodgers allowed the 21-year-old to leave in search of first team football.

Moving to Liverpool from Charlton back in 2010, Shelvey made 18 Premier League appearances for the club during his first two seasons there, and although appeared regularly as Liverpool’s starting center midfielder early last season, he rarely started during the second part of last season. But in light of Jordan Henderson regaining form, Shelvey correctly though move away from Anfield will help kick-start his career.

While West Ham United and newly promoted Crystal Palace showed interest in the English international, Liverpool only deemed Swansea’s bid acceptable. Although a starting position is not guaranteed, as Swansea host strong midfielders including Jonathan De Guzman, Leon Britton, and Wayne Routledge, he would most likely play much more than he did at Liverpool, with the prospect of European football next season also helping drive the move. Swansea won last years’ Capital One Cup, meaning they will gain entry into next season’s Uefa Europa League, and as Liverpool finished a mere 7th place in the Prem last season, staying at Anfield would mean he would not gain any experience at the European level until he is at least 23 years old.

Shelvey will look to complete the deal before Liverpool begin pre-season training next week, and will also seek to gain a few extra days of training before next season at Swansea, which started began their summer training sessions today.

Swansea chairmen Huw Jenkins confirmed the club’s interest in Shelvey, saying: “There is an interest there and we are talking to Liverpool.”
