Colombia surprisingly found themselves in third place as Fifa released their updated world rankings

Colombia climbed up four places into an astounding third place while Brazil’s marvelous Confederations Cup final win over Spain helped them shoot back into the top ten as Fifa released the July edition of their world rankings.  One will probably agree that Fifa might need to rethink their way of calculating the rankings, as Colombia now only sit behind Germany and Spain after a successful run of 2014 World Cup qualifiers.  The hosts of next year’s tournament meanwhile have deservedly rocketed back into the top ten after falling down to their lowest ever position last month, which somehow found them in 22nd place.  Luiz Scolari’s side still should be higher than ninth though after their dominant 3-0 win over world champions Spain, who remain in the pole position ahead of second place Germany.

The Confederations Cup’s two other semifinalists also benefited from the competition with Italy taking up sixth place while Uruguay rose up seven places into twelfth.  Some those nations who didn’t compete in the Confed Cup also rose because of their ongoing World Cup qualifiers and friendlies, with Cape Verde Islands (49th), Scotland (50th), Austria (54th), Guinea (61st), Armenia (66th), Senegal (74th) and Malta (133rd), all rising more than 20 positions.

Bosnia-Herzegovina were also among those notable movers, as they climbed into their best ever ranking of fourteenth place. England dropped six places into their worst ever position since 2001, with Roy Hodgson’s side licking their wounds as they fall to fifteenth place.  Ecuador also ended their brief two month spell in tenth place, rightly falling eight places into eighteenth.
