Sunderland agree undisclosed fee with AZ Alkmaar for Jozy Altidore

Sunderland are close to completing their seventh signing of the summer, with the English club agreeing an undisclosed fee for AZ Alkmaar forward Jozy Altidore. Dutch club AZ announced they agreed a fee with Sunderland for the United States international early Saturday on their official website, although they declined to reveal the amount the club is set to pay for Altidore, which is believed to be around 6 million.

The 23-year-old will travel to England and could undergo a medical at the Stadium of Light on Monday, three years after he first left the Premier League. Playing for Hull City on loan from Villarreal in the 2010/11, the former American Under-17, Under-20, and Under-23 forward was expected to be the new great American forward, but never quite made the billing. Still, the No9 has been on hot form for AZ, helping them to a Dutch Cup trophy, scoring 38 goals in 68 appearances in all competitions for the club since moving there in 2011. Also scoring in each of his last four matches for the United States (bringing his tally of goals for his nation up to 13 in 55 caps), AZ would have been hoping Altidore at least saw out the final two years of his current contract at the club before Sunderland made a bid.

If the move is completed Altidore will be the seventh addition to Paolo Di Canio’s Sunderland side, making them the busiest club in the Premier League. Having already completed the signings of Modibo Diakite, Valentin Roberge, Cabral, Duncan Watmore, David Moberg Karlsson and Vito Mannone, the Black Cat’s summer recruitment still shows no sign of abating.
