MOTD- Manchester United 0- 1 Singha All Stars

By on July 13, 2013

Manchester United’s new David Moyes era kicked off to a dreadful start as the Premier League champions’ squad made up of substitutes suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to the Singha All Stars in Bangkok. Wilfred Zaha earned his debut in a Manchester United shirt, although it will not be a match he will remember for the scoreline, with Teeratep Winothai giving the All Stars a surprise 1-0 victory.

The match itself was played at the pace of a friendly; slow, and sloppy, but the first few minutes of the encounter saw the All Stars jump out of the gate brightly, passing their way around the midfield. United had the majority of the chances though, with Tom Cleverly firing a shot wide from fifteen yards in the tenth minute. One of Moyes’ new young talents Januzaj then came inches away from opening the scoring when Fabio whipped a superb cross into the six-yard box and Januzaj fired an almost perfect volley just over the bar.

Although the flow of the game was still about level United kept finding themselves in good positions, which they mostly wasted. Ryan Giggs curled a lovely pass from the left through to the run of Danny Welbeck as the English side launched another attack in the thirtieth minute, only for the All Stars’ goalkeeper Narit Taweekul to pounce on Welbeck’s tap around the Thai footballer. Still, some of the United player took the match as an unimportant friendly, as shown when Welbeck accidentally back-heeled the ball out for an All Star goal-kick when attempting some tricks. The All Stars’ capitalized United’s sloppiness and their excellent passing, and Teerasil Dangda forced United keeper Ben Amos into a fantastic save to push his snappy volley from fifteen yards wide of the post.

United fans would have been hoping Moyes’ could produce some of Sir Alex Ferguson’s hairdryer treatment of his squad as halftime rolled around, but the All Stars’ surprisingly took the lead minutes into the second half. Moyes’ defense was cut apart as the All Stars’ push forward, and Dagno Siaka cut the ball to Winothai with the outside of his boot. Winothai wasn’t properly defended by the United center-backs, with the former Everton forward curling a low shot from a tight angle on the right of goal that wrong-footed Amos and crept just inside the near post.

Giggs & Co reacted sluggishly to the goal, although Fabio and Januzaj had their shots blocked before the referee blew the final whistle to end a rather sheepish match of football.
