Cavani joins PSG for record-breaking €64m fee
Edison Cavani has signed for Paris Saint-Germain for €64, breaking the French Ligue 1’s transfer record as he become’s another part of PSG’s dream to win the Champions League. The Uruguayan will follow former teammate Ezequiel Lavezzi from Napoli to PSG, signing a five-year contract at the Parc des Princes.
Cavani attracted interest from many top European clubs including Chelsea after leading Serie A’s scoring charts last season with 29 goals, but PSG won the forward’s signature due to their sky high ambitions and mounds of cash to support them. The 26-year-old chose PSG because he was “seduced” by their goal of becoming the best club in the world, which has already attracted the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Javier Pastore, Lucas Moura, and Thiago Silva.
The club is not only craving to pair Cavani with Ibrahimovic up top in a “dream” attacking duo, but also wanting to see if he can rekindle his partnership with Lavezzi. With PSG’s new addition able to add 30 goals to Les Parisien’s total next season and Ibrahimovic likely to score just as many, the club is almost certain to defend their title of Ligue 1’s highest scoring team in 2013/14. PSG should also hold next’s season’s top scorer in the French top-flight division, with Cavani admitting he would have to battle it out with Ibrahimovic and Monaco’s Falcao over the French version of Spain’s Pachichi.
“It’s going to be tough, because we’re goalscorers, and always try to bring to the team our goals,” the Uruguayan international said. “It’s our mission and ambition to score. It’s going to be a very tight competition, and hope that we can give the French league a lot of goals.”
Cavani was introduced with the forward’s number nine shirt at his official presentation at PSG, meeting alongside the club’s president Nasser Al Khelaifi, who only just managed to conceal his delight at signing the forward.
“Everyone knows Cavani, everyone wanted him, but today he’s signed for us, he’s a PSG player and I’m very happy about that,” Khelaifi said. “He was the top scorer in Serie A, I hope he’ll do better with us this season. I hope too that we’ll continue our project to win Ligue 1, and do our maximum in the Champions League. It’s not easy, but we’ll do our best. The arrival of Cavani is the proof of the continuity of our project, to realise our objectives to make PSG the best team in Europe.”
