Napoli have completed the €40 million signing of Gonzalo Higuain from Real Madrid with Higuain replacing Paris Saint-Germain bound Edison Cavani.  The Italian club’s new manager Rafa Benitez was looking for a replacement for their departed €55 front-man as he rebuilds his side ahead of their potentially glorious Serie A season, and signed Higuain on a reported five-year-contract.

Higuain will follow former Madrid teammates Jose Callejon and Raul Albiol to Napoli, becoming the club’s third signing from Los Blancos this summer.  The Serie A runners-up also captured Pepe Reina from Liverpool and Dries Mertens from PSV Eindhoven earlier this summer, and announced their fifth signing of the summer via their official website: “Napoli have made the signing of Gonzalo Higuain official,” a statement read.

Higuain moved to Real Madrid from River Plate in January 2007 as a 19-year-old, but despite his age he immediately cemented his starting spot in Los Galacticos’ side.  The Frenchman scored 107 goals in his 190 appearances for the Spanish club, helping him break his way into the Argentina national team.  The French-born forward made his international debut for Argentina in 2009, and has scored 20 goals in 32 appearances for the South American nation since.

The 25-year-old’s move to Madrid comes as bad news to English club Arsenal, who are now even more desperate to land Liverpool forward Luis Suarez.  For Madrid it will help make way for a move for Tottenham superstar Gareth Bale come through, and also open up a possible space for Suarez.
