Liverpool have lodged a €25m bid for Atletico Madrid forward Diego Costa

Liverpool have made a €25 million for Atletico Madrid forward Diego Costa, a fee understood to meet the Brazilian’s release clause. With the English club hoping to make up for the possible departure of Luis Suarez and reinforce their front-line, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodger’s moved towards Atletico’s second choice striker.

Costa, who has earned two caps for Brazil, scored 20 goals in 44 appearances last season, and with Radamel Falcao headed for Monaco the 24-year-old looked set to take up a starting position. But the Copa del Rey’s new acquisition’s of David Villa and Léo Baptistão put Costa’s playing time in jeopardy, and manager Diego Simeone indicated that he would allow the frontman to leave if he wished.

Liverpool will like to complete the transfer quickly to get Costa settled in at Anfield before the start of the season, but with Atletico denying the forward is for sale it could be a while before the possible move is finalized. Although the English club hope for Costa to end up as back-up for Luis Suarez and possibly challenge Daniel Sturridge’s spot, Suarez’s future remains to be seen. Arsenal recently lodged improved £41m for the Uruguayan, but the Reds rejected the bid out of hand.

Still, they would like a backup ready, with Rodgers claiming whoever they sign he must be of the correct quality. “They have to be of the right quality, that’s the bottom line,” Rodgers said of his remaining transfer options. “We’ve got money to spend on getting that quality in, but if it’s not available I won’t waste it for the sake of bringing a player in. We’re really working hard to bring in the type of profile that can really help us push on. We just need to see if that’s available and affordable.”
