Clint Dempsey set to make surprise move to Seattle Sounders

Tottenham Hotspur forward Clint Dempsey is set to make a sensational move back to Major League Soccer with Seattle Sounders for a fee thought to be worth around $9 million. Dempsey, who played for New England Revolution before joining Fulham in 2007, only last year wanted to play Champions League football and joined Tottenham, but now will not be playing in Europe at all.

He will be a great acquisition for American soccer as a whole, yet one question remains: will it be a good move for Dempsey himself? With the World Cup coming in just under one year, the United States national team manager Jurgen Klinsmann will be looking to select players featuring in top leagues, which the MLS is not. The thirty-year-old will be earning more, around $8m-a-year, and he is set to feature as Sounder’s star player. The former Fulham forward will stay sharp for the World Cup, and have a major popularity boost among American fans despite the lowering status of his competition.

The move, which Tottenham announced on their official website, will have a few drawbacks for Dempsey, but is a amazing lift for the MLS, and can make it a more attractive league to join.

“We have reached agreement with Major League Soccer for the transfer of Clint Dempsey,” a statement read on Tottenham’s website.
